Benefits of a two-seater outhouse

by Mr. New to Denver on Sep.02, 2009, under Activities

If you ever need to build yourself an outhouse make sure it is a two seat outhouse.  I’m sure for most of you this will never be an issue.  However since I didn’t know about the advantages of a two seat outhouse until tonight I figured I’d share this information with everyone…lest you find yourself faced with having to decide what kind of outhouse to dig.

The night started at a local bar called El Camino.  I was watching the Rockies beat the Mets when I met Tim.  I explained I was from NY, he explained that he was from some rural place in the south.   It was so rural that he had an outhouse.  But not any outhouse, a two seat outhouse.   I’m not referring to having a large seat for adults and a small seat for kids.  I mean two separate holes in the ground

From what I gather two people wouldn’t use the outhouse at the same time.   After all that would almost be as disgusting as using an outhouse in the first place.  The second hole gets used after the first hole gets “filled up.”  Once the first hole is filled, you pour lime down the hole.   Lime seems to neutralize the odor and breakdown the waste.  While that process is taking place you would use the second hole.  By alternating seats you can ensure your outhouse remains…(Hmmm. I’m not going to use the word clean. )  How about the word “less disgusting”.  That sounds about right.  If you want a less disgusting outhouse get a two-seater.

I asked Tim if he used a bed pan during the night.  He responded that “for number #1, I would just go off the side of the porch.”

In terms of key innovations in human history I firmly believe that running water and the flushable toilet don’t get nearly enough credit.
